The Twins represents the artist’s recognition of the spirit of oil paintings. His style, connection of western classic realistic language of oil painting with elements of China traditional culture, is reflected obviously in this painting. The picture represented a couple of young twins, behind whom the artist treated the whole background with dark tone which pushed the twins in front of the picture. The twins’ facial expression and gesture has obviously modern trace, the Chinese style chair, as the support of this modernity, retreated into the dark background. This arrangement indicates the regression state of history in the modern civilization, which is the reflection of both contradiction and union between history and modern. Chen Yanning is good at using modern aesthetic tendency to deal with the topic of oriental classic culture. The content of his works is oriental, but the form is western classicism.
